Boris Pasternak was a Russian writer during the Russian Revolution. His father was the son of two artists and his son was taught by privot tutors. His father, like Chris had expectations for him. Also similar to Chris, he wrote about the government during a time when Stalin was in power which was his form of civil disobedience for the time. In the section on page 187, his writing is relevent to Chris because the underlined parts are what really spoke to Chris and what he felt he learned on his journey. "Love one's neighbor" spoke to him because he became close to the people whom he met on his journey to Alaska. "Free personality" spoke to him because that is what he believed in when he went out there: he was being his own man. "Life as sacrifice" spoke to him because he gave up everything to become who he wanted to be and who he thought he was.
